  • Our architecture is inspired by memory of a spatial experience. We use associations to construct an image of the building at the beginning. At a moment during the design process, the building will present a unique image in itself that becomes a reference for us to develop it further. This is a continuous process.

    Our design process is rooted in the personal and human realm of architecture. It never begins with form or style. We design buildings that are sensitive to the user and the environment. We have a layered approach to design that intends for functionality, space, climate, material and structure to come together in a meaningful way. This is where architecture can find a greater purpose and meaning in our lives.

  • We want our buildings to have a quality of authenticity and timelessness. It involves a rigour and discipline in the act of making of the architecture through materials, construction, structure, detailing. A building should draw you in through its beauty, light and materiality, movement and details and bring you pleasure and a sense of comfort.

    Material and construction are at the core of our work. The built environment is designed to be experienced by all senses. Our memory of an object or a space is constructed by what we see, touch, feel, and smell. Materials themselves do not have meaning. The way we combine them gives a unique meaning to the built form that forms the backdrop for life. The relationship between the details and the overall built form is important to us.

  • We engage in discourse about architecture & the city, the way people and communities live and inhabit places. Cities are a powerful framework for the way we live, work & interact. We are interested in making a positive impact through research & planning, housing & public space design. It requires us to simultaneously think about buildings and neighbourhoods and work between the two scales.

Founder & principal architect

Solachi Ramanathan is the founder and principal architect at Urban Workshop, a spatial design studio whose work includes Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design & Product Design. 

Her work is sensitive to the context, users, materials and resources. 

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from School of Architecture and Planning, Chennai and a Master’s Degree in Housing & Urbanism from Architectural Association in London. She has worked with Mathew & Ghosh Architects in Bangalore and Vikram Phadke in Chennai, where she gained experience in Architecture and Interior Design.

Her exposure to Indian architecture and craft during her childhood drives her interest in the intersection of craft, making and technology. She is inspired by her experiences in London and through her travels around Europe to create vibrant and stimulating environments in cities.
